Rambi
Rambi the Rhino is the toughest and the strongest of the land animals. He can charge at your enemies, he can stomp them, and he can stabbed them with his horn (Y button). He can also open secret walls for you. He's your living battering ram.
Winky
This animal (actually amphibian) is the highest jumper among all the animals. He can also stomp the baddies, including bees. His hopping around can sometimes make you lose control though.
Enguarde
The only water animal (actually fish) in the game. His speed in water is incredible, of course, what can you expect from a swordfish? He can also stab your enemies with his nose (Y button). You'll feel safer in the water when you're riding on his back.
Expresso
Expresso is the fastest animal in Donkey Kong Country. He has no attack to trample the baddies, but his long feet will sometimes prevent Klaptraps and other crawling animals from biting you. Another ability that Expresso possesses that's worthy of attention is his high jumping, and flying ability (B button while on air). Well, it's not really flying as this bird's losing altitude, but he can make you stay in the air for a while.
Squawks
A parrot that provides you with light on the dark stages. You can't control him, instead, he follows you throughout the stage.
